The world of work at Heraeus is changing – and Muriel Thomas, manager at Heraeus Printed Electronics, is part of it. In the interview, the material scientist with a doctorate looks back on the beginning of her professional career, the changes in the industry and tells us what advice she gives to young women in scientific careers.
Thomas, who holds a PhD in materials science, has been with Heraeus for 15 years in various positions. She is currently responsible for the business development of the start-up Heraeus Printed Electronics. There she played a key role in the development of the innovative Prexonics® technology, which efficiently protects electronic devices from electromagnetic interference. A wafer-thin layer of silver applied with an inkjet printer effectively shields even the smallest components in smart phones.
In addition to her leadership role, Thomas is also active as a mentor. For twelve years, she has been supporting young scientists and passing on her experience to the younger generation. Her advice to women who want to pursue a career in STEM subjects: "Be visible, show your good performance, try new opportunities and don't be afraid to make mistakes!" STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In the following interview, Muriel Thomas talks about the changing world of work, the importance of diversity and what she would do differently today.
